Pilates is suitable for just about everybody. It really doesn't matter whether you're 18 or 80, there are lots of different levels you can work at.

 

This group class is aimed at increasing core strength, stability and toning, providing a comprehensive workout for the whole body. It will improve balance and co-ordination, help with injury prevention and aid relief from stress & back pain while improving mind-body awareness. Pilates exercises not only strengthen the weaker muscles and give the dominant muscles a break by demanding that you work symmetrically, they also make you more aware of your body.

 

Pilates is very effective and powerful. It makes your entire body stronger and more flexible. It helps your body to know what good posture feels like right away and quickly improves your breathing, which also improves your mood and general outlook. Even after a few classes, you’ll look and feel taller, more energised, more capable and more alive.             

 

The exercises are based on 8 principles: 

 

Relaxation - (release of unwanted tension) often around the back, neck, shoulders and hips.

Concentration - "It is the mind itself which builds the body" - J. Pilates.

Alignment - optimal posture and muscle balance.

Breathing - correct use of diaphragm and full breath.           

Centering - moving from a strong controlled torso.          

Co-Ordination - mindful, purposeful movement.          

Flowing Movement - graceful, controlled movement lengthening away from a strong centre.                      

Stamina - endurance in your stability muscles and efficient muscle action- like a well serviced car with a finely tuned engine and wheel alignment!

 

Exercises incorporating these principles are taught initially as matwork on the floor and then using specialised Pilates equipment.
